Orange Is The New Black fans, mark your calendars.

Laverne Cox is coming to campus to speak on Oct. 8 during National Coming Out Week, sponsored by the LGBTA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Ally) Student Resource Center (SRC). She will start her visit on campus with a meet-and-greet at 3 p.m. in the HUB’s Freeman Auditorium. At 7 p.m., Cox will present a lecture followed by a question-and-answer session. The LGBTA SRC will then have an open house from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10.

Laverne, who plays Sophia Burset on the critically acclaimed Netflix-only show, is the first transgender woman of color to have a leading role on a mainstream scripted television show.  She has taken her empowering message of moving beyond gender expectations to live more authentically all over the country, which garnered her the Anti-Violence Project’s 2013 Courage Award. As a transgender advocate, Cox continues to lend her voice to the cause of transgender visibility and equality.
