Women’s Soccer Tops Nebraska, 3-1

The No. 7 Penn State Nittany Lions defeated the Nebraska Cornhuskers 3-1 last night in a contest that was controlled by Penn State for the majority of the night.

The scoring started early for the Lions, after Mallory Weber sent home an Emily Hurd cross four minutes into the first half. Frannie Crouse made it 2-0, capitalizing on a header in the 39th minute. The Cornhuskers were quick to respond, however, as Mayme Conroy scored unassisted just one minute later to make the score 2-1.

The second half consisted mostly of close chances, but no goals scored until Haleigh Echard put in her first collegiate goal in the 89th minute, making the game 3-1 and far out of reach for Nebraska. Echard took a through ball up the middle, easily blowing by Nebraska goalkeeper Kelly Schatz, who was playing way out of the box. Echard had nothing but an empty net to put the ball into, and the Jeffrey field crowd erupted after Echard shot it through.

The win puts the Nittany Lions at 15-2 on the year, and 10-1 in the Big Ten. Next up for Penn State is a match against Iowa on Sunday. Be sure to catch the action, as the Lions will honor four seniors on senior day.
