Women’s Soccer Pushes Forward to Sweet 16

Penn State Women’s Soccer eked out a 1-0 win Friday night over UConn in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

The Nittany Lions wasted no time taking control of the match. After Kori Chapic centered a pass from outside the box, Penn State’s leading scorer Frannie Crouse headed in a cross to the back of the net for the lead in the 7th minute of the match.

Led by Britt Eckerstrom’s five saves in her eighth shutout of the year, the Nittany Lions were able to hold off the Huskies for 84 minutes. With only five shots on goal, Penn State’s match was filled with missed offensive opportunities. With 18 total shots, their best opportunity at increasing their lead came in the 63rd minute when forward Mallory Weber let a shot sail high and wide after Crouse lost the ball from 20 yards out.

The Nittany Lions will face off with Virginia Tech in the third round after the Hokies defeated Georgetown 4-3 Friday. For those still in State College, the match will kickoff on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Jeffrey Field.
