Hackenberg, Zettel Named to BTN.com’s All-B1G Bowl Team

Following Penn State’s 31-30 Pinstripe Bowl victory that smashed multiple school bowl game records, Christian Hackenberg and Anthony Zettel were named to BTN.com’s Tom Dienhart’s all-conference bowl team.

Hackenberg torched Boston College’s defense for 371 yards on 34 completions, both Penn State bowl game bests. His four touchdowns came at crucial points of the tense matchup. A 72-yard bomb midway through the opening quarter to Chris Godwin gave Penn State an early lead. In the fourth quarter, Hackenberg connected with redshirt freshman receiver DaeSean Hamilton from 16 yards out for a game-tying touchdown. In overtime, his 10-yard fade to Kyle Carter led to Sam Ficken’s game-winning kick.

“The bowl game and everything its meant to the program, and not just this team, but the alumni, the guys that played before us, the guys that stuck through it, the 2012 class — I think that added a little motivation not just for myself but for everyone,” he said following the victory.

The performance awarded him the Pinstripe Bowl’s Most Valuable Player honor.

On the other side of the ball, Zettel recorded a game-high two tackles-for-loss. That added to his season total of 17.0, which ranked second in the Big Ten. The defensive lineman also tallied six tackles in the game.

With Ohio State’s 42-20 victory over Oregon in the national championship, the Big Ten finished its bowl schedule with a 6-5 record, silencing many of the critics that had Big Ten representatives as underdogs in every game.
