Student Group Urges Barron To End Fossil Fuel Investment
Students from Fossil Free PSU will deliver a letter to President Eric Barron this afternoon, urging the university to divest itself of investments in fossil fuels. They plan to first gather outside Old Main at 1:10 p.m. before hand-delivering the letter to Barron in his office.
Fossil Free PSU is Penn State’s chapter of the national Fossil Free movement. The national organization seeks to persuade universities to reallocate funds currently invested in fossil fuels to approaches of more sustainable energy. Penn State, according to Fossil Free, currently invests tens of millions of dollars in the fossil fuel industry.
The letter delivery is part of worldwide Global Divestment Day. More than 400 actions on six continents are taking place as part of the day of international environmental awareness.
On Thursday, activists displayed a banner at the HUB before heading to Old Main and delivering Valentine’s Day cards to the Board of Trustees, urging divestment of fossil fuels. In mid-December, the organization also delivered symbolic bags of coal to the trustees.
