Dancers Try to Stay Positive Despite Floor Pass Troubles

Floor pass issues have, once again, reared their head at THON 2015, and that issue has started to affect some of the dancers.

Kara Slocum, a dancer with the American Society of Civil Engineers, said no one was able to visit her for eight hours at the beginning of THON because her organization faced a floor pass suspension.

THON declined to comment on any of the pass suspension incidents. In fact, a THON Public Relations captain asked me to not include what Slocum told me about her organization’s suspension in this story. Even though she had to go a few hours without seeing her family, Slocum said she’s doing really well. Her DCRMer Parth Patel said she’s been really great throughout THON.

“She’s been killing it,” he said. “She’s honestly been taking care of me the whole time. She’s been showing me where things are, carrying my stuff.”

Recently Slocum said she was able to see her brother and her friends in recent hours. So far for her, THON has been a whirlwind and way better than she even expected.

“I thought it was going to be harder, but there’s so many positive people around to lift you up, and like the crowd definitely helps you,” she said.

Though they are generally doing pretty well so far, many dancers just want to know what’s going on with the pass list.

Diana Vigna, an independent dancer, said it’s most frustrating that the dancers have been left in the dark about what’s going on and about when they can see the people on their pass lists.

“Everyone’s kind of freaking out and nervous and wondering where everyone is,” she said. “They just don’t keep us in the loop which I understand, they don’t want us to get worried, but we’re worried not knowing.”

She said she wishes she could get more information about the pass situation so she can adjust and know what to expect. Vigna and her dancing partner have relied on each other and supported each other to help them keep going.

Vigna said everyone’s been telling her she’s doing really well, and she’s tried to keep up her spirits. All of the people in the stands and the interesting events going on around THON have helped her to stay energetic.

“I’m trying to just stay positive, especially when there’s so much going on around us,” she said.

Thanks, Mom And Dad: Mindy Szkaradnik’s Senior Column

The band finished its set at the Phyrst last semester and “Build Me Up Buttercup” came on over the speakers. Most people continued with their conversations as usual, but I turned and glanced at at the dance floor. There were my parents, dancing in each other’s arms to the song that they used to dance to years ago at the Gaff.
