Penn State Baseball Series Canceled Due To Inclement Weather

Penn State baseball’s weekend slate of games was canceled Thursday due to snowy weather in Cary, N.C., the site of the USA Baseball-Irish Classic.

The triangle-area of North Carolina was blanketed with six to eight inches on Thursday morning, forcing coaches to consider shutting down the event and begin seeking other opportunities. The official call to cancel was announced Thursday morning.

After starting the season with six straight losses, Penn State was looking to chalk up a tally in the win column in this weekend’s slate of games against NC State, Cincinnati, and Notre Dame. The three-day series was set to begin Friday, Feb. 27.

“Mother Nature and Old Man Winter are still undefeated,” Notre Dame head coach Mik Aoki said in a release. “Everyone involved tried to do everything we possibly could in order to give ourselves the best chance to play this tournament. But for the safety and well-being of all the student-athletes and the people that would be working or attending, it was best to make this decision.”

Head Coach Rob Cooper looked into alternative sites and opponents for the weekend, but ultimately couldn’t find any suitable options.

Following an unlikely break, Penn State will play eight games in 10 days, starting Friday, March 6 with a three-game series at Charleston Southern. During spring break, the Nittany Lions will also have two games at No. 10 South Carolina and three games at the Liberty Invitational, which will include one game against Western Carolina and two against host Liberty.

Get Out There And Meet People: CJ Doon’s Senior Column

Whether it’s natural curiosity or fear of the spotlight, I’m not sure, but I’ve always been more comfortable asking questions rather than answering them. Interviewing interesting people — friends, family, or strangers — is an enjoyable activity that I hope to turn into a living. At Penn State, I was afforded the opportunity to follow that passion — and then some.
