Assistant VP For Police And Public Safety Requests Reassignment Following Review

After an extensive review that found an apparent disconnect between supervisors and the supervised, university officials announced the reassignment of assistant vice president for Police and Public Safety, Stephen Shelow, on Wednesday. Shelow requested to be relieved of his role following the results of the two-month administrative review, according to a Penn State release.

The review was conducted by internal specialists in conjunction with an outside consultant. Shelow is now working on special projects under the direction of the senior vice president for finance and business, David Gray, who confirmed the report.

“We came to a difficult mutual decision based on the review findings. It is imperative that our officers and our community have confidence in leadership, at all levels in all areas,” Gray said in the release.

Gray specified there were no official complaints lodged against Shelow, and there were no violations of the law or mention of wrong doing in the review findings. Shelow said issues unveiled by the review would be best dealt with by new leadership, and the time had come for the department to “move forward in a positive manner.”

“It’s simply recognizing the need for an organizational change that can provide people in these critical areas with a clearer vision and direction, and an environment where employees can succeed,” Gray said.

Until an interim replacement is named, Penn State Police Chief Tyrone Parham will serve as the acting assistant vice president. There will be a national search for a permanent replacement.
