Student Punches Landlord In Attempt To Get Out Of Lease

There are many different ways to get out of a lease these days, with subletting being the most common. Assaulting your landlord, however, is a path not frequently taken.

Around noon on Monday, April 6, Penn State sophomore Jeanne Sung punched her landlord at the Meridian after attempting to steal the original copy of her lease. According to State College Police, Sung first arrived in the Meridian’s office requesting to get out of the apartment lease she had signed two weeks ago. Of course, the landlord declined, at which point Sung asked to see the original copy of the lease.

After reviewing the lease for a brief moment, Sung attempted to walk out the door with the document like Nicholas Cage in National Treasure. Then again, she’s not Nicholas Cage and was caught immediately. As her landlord demanded that she stop, Sung, with the lease in her left hand, delivered a right hook to the landlord after she attempted to grab Sung’s purse, leaving her in a state of shock.

As Sung ran away, video surveillance cameras captured Sung ripping up the lease in the Meridian’s parking lot. Police then later recovered the shredded document in various trash cans blocks away from the Meridian.

After police arrived at the scene, the landlord was taken to the hospital, where CAT scans showed she had received a concussion. Sung is now facing misdemeanor charges of tampering with records, simple assault, and theft by unlawful taking.

And worst yet, she’s still committed to her lease.
