In the midst of all the celebration surrounding Penn State football’s return to Beaver Stadium for the Blue-White game, James Franklin landed his sixth recruit of the 2016 class.

Four-star cornerback and Upper Marlboro, Md. native Zechariah McPhearson committed to Penn State following today’s Blue White game, which was first reported by Ryan Snider of Rivals. McPhearson chose the Nittany Lions over offers from Alabama, Boston College, California, Clemson, and Pittsburgh.

McPhearson is the second four-star cornerback to enter the 2016 class, joining Detroit native Lavert Hill. 247 Sports ranks McPhearson as the 28th-best cornerback prospect in the country, and the 10th-best recruit from the state of Maryland. McPhearson is the second Maryland native to commit to the 2016 class, following in the footsteps of DeMatha Catholic’s four-star defensive end Shane Simmons.

At 6-foot-1, 181 pounds with blazing 4.49 40-yard speed, McPhearson fits the ideal mold of a cornerback in Bob Shoop’s system. With young corners Grant Haley and Christian Campbell already paying huge dividends, Penn State’s secondary figures to be in great shape with the addition of another standout corner in McPhearson. Check out the rest of his highlight on his Hudl page.

It’s much too early to make guesses about how Penn State’s 2016 class will turnout, but seeing that Franklin has already secured six four-star prospects, including Rochester’s standout quarterback Jake Zembiec, the future looks bright.
