Penn State Hoops To Host DePaul In Inaugural Gavitt Tipoff

Penn State basketball announced it will host the DePaul Blue Demons of the Big East in the inaugural Gavitt Tipoff Games on Tuesday, Nov. 17, the third announced opponent of its 2015-16 schedule.

Penn State has had no luck against DePaul, sporting an 0-6 record since 1938, though the two teams haven’t matched up since 1984 in Rec Hall. Coming off a 12-20 season, DePaul hasn’t been nationally relevant since the 2003-04 season, when it won the Big East and made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Since, it’s had two winning seasons, the last in 2006-07. There is some promise for the Blue Demons this season, at least, returning four starters.

DePaul joins George Washington and Drexel in Penn State’s 2015-16 schedule, both of whom the Lions defeated last season during their thrilling 12-1 non-conference run that proved for naught. Next season, Penn State will see George Washington in Washington, D.C., and Drexel in the Palestra.

Named in honor of Dave Gavitt, the former commissioner of the Big East, the Tipoff Series will run eight years and pit members of the Big East and Big Ten against one another in home-and-home series. The Gavitt Tipoff Games will have four home games each for Big East and Big Ten schools from 2015-22.

Though Penn State’s matchup isn’t very exciting, the Gavitt Tipoff will have some good basketball. The full 2015 schedule is below.

Tuesday, Nov. 17
Georgetown at Maryland
DePaul at Penn State
Nebraska at Villanova

Wednesday, Nov. 18
Illinois at Providence

Thursday, Nov. 19
Creighton at Indiana
Iowa at Marquette
Rutgers at St. John’s

Friday, Nov. 20
