Phi Kappa Tau Suspended Amidst Hazing Allegations

Phi Kappa Tau has been suspended after allegations of possible hazing that resulted in injuries. WTAJ reported the hospital notified State College Police about the incident over the weekend.

The Fraternity and Sorority Life Director and Director of Student Conduct are working with the State College Police department, university spokeswoman Lisa Powers said.

“They are looking into a report of individuals from this fraternity who had similar injuries,” Powers said.

PKT’s spring pledge class was initiated last Friday

Powers didn’t specify the nature of the injuries, but said that PKT’s national organization and the Interfraternity Council suspended the fraternity while the investigation is ongoing. She added that administrators plan to meet with PKT leadership. IFC president Rick Groves confirmed the suspension pending a formal investigation.

The consequences of hazing are severe, as outlined by IFC bylaws. There’s a minimum sanction of $120 per member, a 13-week social suspension, and a membership review. The maximum sanction is the ultimate loss of recognition.

Meanwhile, across the street from PKT, Pi Kappa Phi lost its recognition by the IFC and national fraternity following an investigation into hazing and conduct allegations. And not too far away, Kappa Delta Rho is still under investigation for its Facebook group scandal.

Update (2:29 p.m.): IFC President Rick Groves released a statement detailing the allegations against Phi Kappa Tau, including placing the chapter on Full Chapter Susupension. “On April 28, the Interfraternity Council was made aware of an alleged hazing incident that resulted in the injury of one or more new members of Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity,” Groves said. “The Interfraternity Council immediately placed Phi Kappa Tau on Full Chapter Suspension, pending the completion of a formal investigation.

We will update as the story progresses.
