Looking To Watch Mayweather-Pacquiao In A State College Bar? Tough Luck

Want to watch the so-called Fight of the Century Saturday tonight? Your options are more limited than you may have imagined. Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao will take to the ring at 9:00 p.m. in one of boxing’s most hyped matches of all time. But the fight comes with a price. Pay-per-view options for non-local viewers run $90.00 to $100.00 depending on which definition you wish to view it in.

To help ease that burden, we reached out to some of the bars in the State College area to find out if they’re airing the broadcast. Champs appears the only place willing to purchase it, while Westside Stadium, The Arena, Bar Bleu, Bill Pickle’s Tap Room, Applebees, Primanti’s, Otto’s, LettermanS, Rotelli, and Local Whiskey all have elected not to do so.

Champs is upping its normal $5.00 UFC cover price to $20.00 for tonight’s fight. But as of Saturday morning, the popular sports bar was sold out and wasn’t taking any more reservations. That leaves patrons with next to no options for this evening, though Champs Altoona will also be broadcasting it.

Why would restaurants turn down seemingly large hoards of fans itching to drink beer, eat wings, and watch the fight? Airing the fight is not necessarily profitable as the licensing fees that restaurants must pay to show the fight are steep. The amount due is derived via a formula that is intended to account for a restaurant’s customer capacity. Even so, bars and restaurants with capacities ranging from 400 to 500 people will be forced to charge between $30.00 and $50.00 per person if they wish to air the fight, assuming they operate at a full house.

Ultimately, this situation leaves Penn Staters with minimal options for watching tonight’s showdown. Windstream Cable’s PPV system is relatively vague, and doesn’t appear to provide access to the fight. A fight fan’s best bet is probably watching through a sling box or streaming the fight online. If anyone can come up with more legitimate ways to watch the fight that we missed, feel free to post them in the comments section.

The fight is, however, being shown for free on television in Mexico. Road trip!
