Christopher Long Selected As Dean At Michigan State

Christopher Long, the College of Liberal Arts’ associate dean for graduate and undergraduate education, will serve as the dean of the College of Arts and Letters at Michigan State University. Long will begin on July 1 pending approval from Michigan State’s Board of Trustees.

“I am honored and excited to lead the College of Arts and Letters in its collaborative efforts to become a national leader in arts and humanities education,” Long told MSUToday. “Through its excellent programs and cutting-edge research, the College of Arts and Letters is an integral part of Michigan State’s educational mission to cultivate imaginative, innovative and engaged citizen leaders who work to enrich the quality of life in communities at home and around the world.”

Long received his bachelor’s degree at Wittenberg University in Ohio and his master and doctoral degrees at the New School of Social Research in New York. He joined the Nittany Lion family in 2004 as a professor of philosophy. In 2005, he served as the director of graduate studies in philosophy until 2010 when he was appointed associate dean for undergraduate education. He added graduate education to his repertoire in 2013.

“We are excited to welcome Dr. Long to MSU,” Michigan State Provost June Pierce Youatt said. “His leadership, creativity and enthusiasm will benefit not only the College of Arts and Letters, but the arts and humanities across campus.”
