Two Student-Athletes Named CoSIDA Academic All-District

Wrestler Matt Brown and field hockey player Laura Gebhart were named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team on Tuesday. Being named to the team automatically puts the duo on a ballot to be named to the All-American team.

Brown was awarded both NCAA and Big Ten Post-Graduate Scholarships for his academic achievements this year. In addition to his success in the classroom, he played a role on four NCAA-champion teams at Penn State and won his first individual National Championship this past winter.

Gebhart was named to the First Team for the second-straight year. The forward/midfielder was named to the field hockey All-American team four times and made the Big Ten First Team four times as well. In 2013, Gebhart captained the U.S. Junior World Cup team and played for the Women’s National Team.

This great news comes on the heels of a record-breaking fall, where 500 student-athletes earned a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher and 241 earned a 3.5 or higher. Last year’s student-athletes earned a graduation success rate of 89 percent, which is seven points higher than the national average. If Brown and Gebhart are any indication, Penn State’s student-athletes are still “keeping the main thing the main thing.”

Success with honor, indeed.
