Former Penn State Soccer Star To Appear In ESPN’s Body Issue

ESPN’s Body Issue will feature a familiar Penn State face this year. Ali Krieger, former Nittany Lion soccer star and current member of Team USA, will appear in the issue when it hits stands in July. ESPN released a sneak peek of its interview and photoshoot entitled Under Ali Krieger’s Uniform on Thursday.

“It’s important to show your vulnerabilities,” Krieger told ESPN. “I’m proud of my body, I’m proud of my sport, I’m proud of being a female athlete. Being naked is just another aspect of that. It’s real. It’s raw. It’s honest.”

Krieger racked up a ton of accolades as a standout midfielder and defender for Penn State from 2003-2006. A two-time All-American, Krieger earned co-defensive player of the year and was a semifinalist for the Hermann Trophy. She was named team captain during her time with the Nittany Lions and helped lead the team to four consecutive Big Ten Championships.

The defenders athletic prowess has helped lead team USA in this summer’s World Cup. She has started all four games and played a tremendous amount of minutes. She is a key player in the American’s strong, lock-down defense and helped to spear head the tough physical play the United States is known for.

She told ESPN, “I have to win, even if I’m just playing pingpong. If I lose, I get so pissed off and need a second. But I think it’s that way with a lot of people at this level — we are all super competitive.”

The United States will need her competitive fire to stay lit if they look to advance in the World Cup. Look for Krieger in the USA’s next match this Friday versus China and keep your eye out for her appearance in ESPN’s Body Issue out July 10.
