eLiving Crashes, Students Can’t View Roommates

Students living on campus for the 2015 school year faced a major roadblock yesterday when the eLiving system completely crashed. All students living on campus received an email that instructed them to log on to the eLiving site after 9 a.m. on Monday to view their housing assignment. The email warned, “high-traffic on the eLiving website on the 20th may slow down service. Please be patient, or check back at another time.”

Predictably, shortly after 9 a.m., the site began to experience problems. The Penn State Housing Twitter account initially blamed the problem on high traffic and encouraged users to try different browsers.

Within a half hour of the initial tweet, the department acknowledged they had a bigger problem on their hands.

Although the IT department was contacted and students were reassured they would be able to access eLiving “soon,” hours later students still had no luck logging in. Panic ensued.

The housing department inevitably blamed the crash on unreliable technology and noted that the IT department was aware that such high traffic would be on the page. That darn technology.

According to frustrated tweets and Facebook posts, the page wasn’t loading regardless of the browser and many students saw the spinning circle of doom instead of where they’d be living. As of 12 a.m. Tuesday morning, here’s what the eLiving site looked like:

Problems were not officially resolved until almost 7 a.m. Tuesday morning, when the housing department tweeted:
