Women’s Volleyball To Appear On National TV Six Times

Rejoice, fans dislocated from Happy Valley — Russ Rose‘s squad will be featured on national television six times during the regular season.

The team’s schedule was released in May, and it seemed to be an exciting slate loaded with marquee matchups against prominent teams — even the bigwigs at the Big Ten Network and ESPNU agree. We briefly analyzed the team’s schedule on our podcast, and credit has to be given where credit is due — the women’s volleyball front office doesn’t give itself an easy schedule.

Late August marks the beginning of the season with three matches over the weekend in the Penn State Classic, with west coast juggernaut Stanford paying a visit to Happy Valley the following weekend. Stanford handed the Nittany Lions their first loss last season, but Penn State avenged the loss by defeating the Cardinal in the Final Four. For this year’s matchup, on Sept. 5 at 8 p.m., fans can see the action live at Rec Hall after the football team’s game at Temple, or fans at home can watch on the Big Ten Network.

The other five televised games remain in the conference, as all matchups will be against Big Ten opponents — vs. Wisconsin on Sept. 23, vs. Nebraska on Oct. 2, at Illinois on Oct. 9, at Michigan on Oct. 21, and at Ohio State on Oct. 28. The first four of those matchups are all night games on the Big Ten Network, with the Buckeye match starting at 5 p.m. on ESPNU. This match will be re-aired on Nov. 1.

Of course, the six televised games are a minimum for the team. Penn State is in the midst of a dynasty, and anything short of a deep NCAA Tournament run will be viewed by those within the program as a failure. Still, all logic dictates that fans will also be able to watch the team from home during the Big Ten Tournament and later rounds of the NCAA Tournament.

First serve is one month away, and another huge season from the nation’s best program is almost upon us.
