No. 3 Penn State Women’s Volleyball Downs No. 11 Ohio State In Straight Sets

No. 3 Penn State (20-2, 9-2) women’s volleyball had little trouble with No. 11 Ohio State (19-4, 8-3) Wednesday night, sweeping the Buckeyes (25-18, 25-15, 25-17) in Columbus.

How It Happened

The Nittany Lions got off to a quick start, taking a 13-2 lead over Ohio State early in the first set. However, the Buckeyes fought back, making it 20-16 and pulling within four points of Penn State. Russ Rose’s squad stayed composed, and were able to finish off the Buckeyes, winning the first set 25-18. Redshirt senior Alyana Whitney led the way for the Nittany Lions in the first set with four kills.

The second set was much closer early on with Penn State only holding a 12-11 advantage. But in true champion fashion, the Nittany Lions were able to pull away from the Buckeyes. Behind the outstanding play of sophomore Ali Frantti — who had eight kills in the second frame — Penn State won the set 25-15, taking a 2-0 set lead into the third.

The Nittany Lions’ dominance continued in the final set. Penn State raced out to a 12-6 lead, and it never looked back. While the Buckeyes never folded and stayed within striking distance, Penn State comfortably finished off the set 25-17, securing another sweep victory for Russ Rose and the Nittany Lions.

Player Of The Game

It was another balanced attack from Penn State which saw Megan Courtney and Aiyana Whitney play strong games, but Ali Frantti is the most deserving of Player of the Game honors. Frantti may have had her best performance of the season, dominating the second set with eight kills and totaling a season-high 14 kills in the victory.

What’s Next?

The Nittany Lions will see Ohio State again for a rematch this Friday (October 30) at 7:00 p.m., but this time the game will be in the friendly confines of Rec Hall.
