Running Back Akeel Lynch Set to Transfer After Graduating

Running back Akeel Lynch announced via Twitter that he will transfer from Penn State and play his fifth year of eligibility elsewhere after graduating in the spring. Lynch has not announced where he will play his final season.

The move comes after the redshirt junior lost his starting job to freshman phenom Saquon Barkley in week three of the 2015 season during the Stripe Out game against Rutgers. Lynch still contributed, but saw his workload diminish severely, getting only 55 carries this year, after getting his number called 147 times last year. With star recruit Miles Sanders set to play for the Nittany Lions next year, and an already deep lineup at running back, the move doesn’t come as much of a surprise for the Toronto native, who would have likely seen his numbers decline again next season.

Lynch joins a growing group of Nittany Lions set to transfer, after Troy Reeder, Daquon Worley, and Geno Lewis announced their intent to transfer earlier this week.

Lynch will be the last Penn State football player to ever wear number 22, after former Heisman winner John Cappelletti allowed him to keep the number following Penn State’s decision to retire Cappelletti’s number in 2013.

Best of luck in the future, and thanks for everything, Akeel!
