Indie Rock Band Lenina Crown Pumps Up THON

“I wanna see you dancing!” shouted front-man Eric Faust of Lenina Crowne as they jumped in to their set Friday night. The indie rock band, formed in State College, is popular among several downtown venues and has grown in popularity since their appearance in Movin’ On 2014. The group is known for their cover songs, making them the perfect band for THON 2016.

The group started off the set with Sugar Ray’s “I Just Want To Fly” and got the crowd on their feet. They quickly switched gears into Smash Mouth’s “All Star” and then mixed it back again into Sugar Ray. They continued with Outcast’s “Hey Ya” and had everyone shaking and clapping along. Their energy was infectious as they jumped around, pumping up the crowd to songs like “Semi Charmed Life” by Third Eye Blind and even “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” by Cindy Lauper. “This is where you sing” Faust shouted to the BJC and he began to sing the final verse of “All these Things I’ve Done” by the Killers. In unison the crowd shouted, “I’ve got soul but I’m not a soldier” back at the stage.

Sax player Nick Rudenko added to the atmosphere with accompaniment in the Paul Simon cover “You Can Call Me Al” and “American Girl” by Tom Petty.

The lyric “Take all your money and give it to charity” only seemed fitting making “What I Got” by Sublime the perfect choice to add to the THON set list. The boys continued with an upbeat and dance cover of Kanye West’s 2005 hit “Gold Digger.”

Lenina Crowne finished their strong set with the famous Beatles hit “Hey Jude” and had Penn State singing back as they mixed it with classic rock hit “The Weight” by The Band.

The group was brought in to pump THON up in its early stages, and that’s exactly what they did. The rest of the musical performances we see this weekend have a tough act to follow.
