Penn State Baseball Takes Down Youngstown State

Youngstown State traveled to Medlar Field to take on the Nittany Lions in the first of a six-game home stand. This was the only game the 10-12 Nittany Lions played the 5-15 Penguins, and the Nittany Lions proved their dominance in a 6-1 win.

How It Happened

Eli Nabholz got the start for Penn State, and he came into the game 0-0 with a 4.22 ERA. Nabholz went five innings, giving up one run on only two hits. The scoring started for the Nittany Lions in the bottom of the third when Jim Haley ripped a double to score Conlin Hughes and Nick Riotto. Tyler Kendall followed with a bloop single to score Haley, and another run was added after that to give the Nittany Lions a 4-0 lead to end the third.

Designated hitter Greg Guers continued the scoring with a long ball in the bottom of the fifth, extending Penn State’s lead to 5-0. Guers continued to stay hot in this game and raise his average this season with a deep triple in the bottom of the seventh. Jim Haley scored, and Penn State led 6-1. The Nittany Lion relievers threw four shutout innings and closed out the five-run victory.

Player Of The Game

Greg Guers | Senior | Designated Hitter

Guers improved his season statistics this game as he added his second home run of the year along with another RBI. The Nittany Lion clean up hitter will hopefully carry the momentum from this game into the rest of the home stand.

What’s Next?

Penn State will stay home to take on Binghamton at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The 11-12 Nittany Lions will hope to reach the .500 mark for the first time this season.
