Hop Along And Pinegrove To Headline 2016 SOMA Arts Crawl

The State College house show and DIY music scene continues to leave its mark on the Penn State community in an unconventional way. Students Organizing The Multiple Arts (SOMA) plays a big part in this, and the club helps shine a light on Penn State’s art and music scene.

One way SOMA accomplishes this is with Arts Crawl, an annual event that combines different art mediums into a one day festival of sorts that takes over North Campus. SOMA brings in local and traveling music artists to perform throughout the day on stages scattered in and around the Visual Arts, Patterson, Palmer, and Stuckeman buildings.

This year, SOMA pulled in two headliners: Philadelphia-based Indie folk-rock group Hop Along will be the main event, complemented by smaller headliner Pinegrove.

Hop Along began picking up steam after their 2012 debut “Get Disowned,” which allowed them the opportunity to move beyond the Philadelphia scene. The band will make a pit stop at Arts Crawl before beginning a tour in May for its sophomore album “Painted Shut.” The quartet has appeared in Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, Noisey, and even NPR Music Tiny Desk Concerts.

Pinegrove, hailing from Montclair, New Jersey, is currently touring its debut LP “Cardinal.” Known for its vibrate stage presence and impassioned lyrics, the band is a favorite on the Arts Crawl Stage.

In addition to the headlining acts, the line up also features bands Bat Zuppel, Carry Fisher, Concords, Dent, Devon Goods, The Duskwhales, Gamma Pope, Ghost Camp, Hodera, Isabel Rex, The Landing, Mail Thief, Mountain Shallows, Mumblr, Pack Wolf, Shark Rock, Shirt/Pants, Surf Bored, and Trunkweed. There is also, as per usual, a number of local artists that will perform throughout the afternoon and evening, including Aaron Bear, Dirt, Peacefeather, Smoke Ring, Smol, The Tommy Roberts, Sea Offs, MIM, flowers de moon, and Palmlines.

During Arts Crawl, SOMA also collaborates with The School of Visual Arts (SoVA) to display student artwork around the festival. SoVa will showcase its exhibition “The Color Of Narrative” as a part of The Hump Day Gallery on the first floor of the Visual Arts Building. The Penn State Sculpture Club will also showcase a post-apocalyptic themed piece during the event.

Arts Crawl will take place on April 15 from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Check out more from Hop Along and Pinegrove below.
