See Some Togas And Donate Some Blood This Greek Week

chariot races

The week members of Greek life love, and non-affiliated members of the community love to hate, is finally upon us.

If you live anywhere near Frat Row, you’re probably painfully aware of what time of year it is: Greek Week, when Greek life peaks and members throw on their nicest togas creating the most legendary walks of shame of the year. It’s certainly a week full of tomfoolery in that sense, but fraternity and sorority members are also hosting some fundraisers that benefit the whole community.

Blood drives benefitting the American Red Cross are slated for Tuesday and Thursday, both running from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Alumni Hall in the HUB.

If you do end up donating blood on Tuesday, reward yourself with some Insomnia Cookies. Greek life is hosting an Insomnia Cookie fundraiser on April 12 from 11 a.m. to 3 a.m. the next morning. Any proceeds raised through the event will benefit Centre County PAWS — certainly an adorable beneficiary. So if you have a late-night hankering for some cookies on Tuesday, buy some Insomnia guilt-free for the benefit of the puppies and kittens.

Non-Greek members of the community will probably want to say out of frat row as the weekend approaches, but the weekend will aim to unify Greek life, first on Thursday with all the toga parties and then on Friday with the “Great Greek Gathering.” Members of Greek life are encouraged to come together and participate in races through blow-up obstacle courses, eat free food, listen to some live music, and see puppies from Centre County PAWS (to play with the puppies, you have to donate $5).

There will be hamburgers, hot dogs, cotton candy, and popcorn as well as free food from DP Dough, Insomnia Cookies, and Pita Pit. Likewise, there will be basket raffles where participants can win catering packages, movie theater prizes, and gifts from Edible Arrangements and Order Up. Winners will be drawn at 5:45 p.m.

Organizers will also host a Toga/90’s costume contest, and winners will be judged at 5:30 p.m.. The first place winner will receive a $50 gift card to Chipotle, the second place winner will receive $35 to Starbucks, and the third place winner will receive $20 to Bagel Crust.

If you’re a member of Greek life, then it’s your time to celebrate the positive things your organization brings to the community. For everyone else, celebrating your Penn State pride will keep you busy enough this weekend.
