Penn State Love Stories: A Post-Grad Connection

The saying goes Penn Staters always find their way back to one another. Eve Gavurin and Brandon Poist are certainly no exception to this rule — but despite similar college careers, their paths never crossed while enrolled at Penn State.

Gavurin and Poist spent their undergraduate careers at University Park. Despite having a variety of shared connections throughout their college career, they somehow never spoke a word to each other during their time at Penn State.

We discovered so many ways our paths should’ve crossed but never did,” Gavurin said.

From the start of freshman year, Gavurin and Poist spent their time in a shared environment. They both sought to pursue a degree in hotel, restaurant, and institutional management and were enrolled in a variety of the same classes and lab sections. Yet the mysterious links continued far outside classroom walls.

Gavurin and Poist accumulated their fair share of mutual friends through Penn State’s college of Health and Human Development. Though their social circles intertwined constantly, both students remained unaware of the other’s existence. As upperclassmen, they both lived at the Pointe apartments, but still never interacted.

“We even stood right across the street from each other during Joe Paterno’s funeral procession,” Gavurin said.

It wasn’t until after graduation that fate finally sparked the first meeting that seemed would never happen.

Poist graduated in 2012 and Gavurin followed only a year later. Instead of splitting off on separate paths, a job working behind the counter in New York finally brought the future couple together.

“We ended up meeting about six weeks after I graduated working at the same Shake Shack location on Long Island,” Gavurin said. “When we met, we formed a pretty quick friendship [because of] that Penn Stater connection and talking about all of our classes and professors that we both knew.”

While their friendship blossomed, they became shocked at how they went so long without meeting. They quickly realized just how many connections and all-too-similar circumstances they had shared while enrolled at Penn State.

Soon enough, their quick connection grew from simply hanging out as friends to gong on dates and eventually beginning the perfect relationship. “[It was] months of friendship that grew into something more and something amazing,” Gavurin said.

The couple recently moved to Baltimore and will have been together nearly three years by the time they tie the knot in October. To this day, they remain confident true destiny is exactly what brought them together.

We are a true example of fate and Penn Staters always finding each other.”
