Tyler Davis Among 20 Lou Groza Award Semifinalists

Tyler Davis found himself among 20 of the nation’s top collegiate kickers Thursday, as the redshirt junior was named a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award.

Davis, a former soccer player out of St. Charles, Ill., had never played in a football game before last fall. He’s currently 21-of-22 for his career on field goal attempts, with his lone miss coming off a block in the Ohio State win. Fellow Big Ten kickers on the list include Minnesota’s Emmit Carpenter and Buckeye Tyler Durbin, who drilled Marcus Allen’s outstretched hands on the iconic block-six to seal the upset.

Davis posted a career-high 14 points in Penn State’s 62-24 victory at Purdue, with eight successful PATs and field goals of 33 and 29 yards. He and Saquon Barkley lead the Nittany Lions in scoring with 69 and 66 points, respectively, through eight games.

Since the award’s inception in 1992, no Penn State kicker has ever brought the hardware home to Happy Valley. Utah senior Andy Phillips, who earned his fourth consecutive semifinalist nod, highlights a talented group to be recognized by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission.
