Penn State climbed all the way to No. 8 in the third installment of the College Football Playoff Rankings Tuesday night.

Following a wild weekend of upsets, James Franklin’s Nittany Lions now have a chance to reach the Big Ten Championship — and perhaps even the Playoff — if they win out and a few key events (like another loss from Washington and Michigan) take place. Penn State made its program debut in the CFP Rankings two weeks ago at No. 12 before reaching No. 10 last Tuesday.

The Big Ten is loaded with top-heavy talent this fall, as three more programs join the Nittany Lions in the Top 10. Jim Harbaugh and the Wolverines stayed put at No. 3 despite dropping their first game of the season, 14-13, on a last-second field goal in Iowa City. Ohio State improved to No. 2 on the heels of back-to-back 62-3 wins over Nebraska and Maryland. Wisconsin, who almost assuredly will represent the West in Indianapolis, checks in at No. 7 in the nation, while the Cornhuskers are slotted No. 18.

Penn State travels to High Point Solutions Stadium this Saturday for an 8:00 tilt with Rutgers on the Big Ten Network.
