Tampa Bay Buccaneers Select Chris Godwin No. 84 Overall

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected Penn State wide receiver Chris Godwin No. 84 overall in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Godwin ranks fourth in program history in receiving yards (2,404) and touchdowns (18). Following a career night in Pasadena that saw him rack up 187 yards and two scores, the 6-foot-1, 205-pound Middletown, Del., native elected to forgo his final season of eligibility.

His spectacular showing at the NFL Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium, site of the Nittany Lions’ 38-31 comeback win in the Big Ten Championship, more than validated his decision to leave school early. Godwin did a little bit of everything for Penn State during his time in Happy Valley. He’ll reunite with former teammate, left tackle Donovan Smith, in Tampa Bay.

Not only was he Trace McSorley’s favorite deep threat in 2016, but Godwin was also known for his sure hands over the middle. He routinely dragged defenders with him downfield, showcasing the strength that helped him post a ridiculous 19 reps of 225 pounds in the bench press. Godwin’s 4.42 in the 40-yard dash alleviated any doubts of his top-end speed on the outside.

The Bucs have loaded up on weapons for Jameis Winston this offseason, as they currently boast a rotation of Godwin, Mike Evans, DeSean Jackson, and first-round pick O.J. Howard.
