Penn State Baseball Swept On The Road At Iowa

Penn State baseball (14-29, 2-12 Big Ten) had a tough weekend in Iowa City, dropping all three of its games against the Hawkeyes at Duane Banks Field — 4-2, 8-2, and 9-1.

How It Happened

Game One

Iowa scored a run in four straight innings, from the second through the fifth, on its way to a 4-2 victory over the Nittany Lions in the top half of a doubleheader Friday night. Penn State finished with just four hits in the loss and added four errors in the field. Starter Sal Biasi (4-5) took the loss after surrendering four hits in three innings of work.

Game Two

Weather concerns forced the teams to play a second straight game starting after 10:30 p.m. CT that stretched well into Saturday morning. Iowa scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning to take an early lead over the Nittany Lions — one it wouldn’t relinquish. Penn State delivered a run in the top of the eighth and ninth, but it was too late to mount a comeback, as Iowa prevailed 8-2. Starter Justin Hagenman (1-8) finished on the losing end with five earned runs in four innings on the mound. The Hawkeyes outhit the Nittany Lions 9-5.

Game Three

Braxton Giavedoni and Nick Riotto led the way offensively for the Nittany Lions from the three and four spot of the lineup, as both went 3 for 4 from the plate. Riotto knocked in Penn State’s lone RBI of the night in the top of the fifth, scoring Christian Helsel on a single to right field. Starter Eric Mock turned in a strong performance with six strikeouts in five innings and no earned runs. Reliever Cole Bartels (0-2) was tabbed with the loss, and Iowa topped the Nittany Lions in hits, 12-10. The Hawkeyes scored all nine of their runs in the 9-1 win in the seventh and eighth innings.

Player Of The Series

Nick Riotto | Senior | Left fielder

The Washington, Pa., native finished the weekend with five hits and an RBI.
