Final Four Preview: Penn State Women’s Lacrosse vs. No. 1 Maryland

Penn State women’s lacrosse (17-3) faces a tough task in No. 1 seed Maryland Friday at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. Here’s a quick rundown on Missy Doherty’s Nittany Lions and everything you need to know to tune into today’s NCAA semifinal.

Series History

Maryland holds a 39-14-1 lead over Penn State in the all-time series between these two programs, with the Terrapins winning 16-14 earlier this season in University Park.

Each team’s head coach in this year’s Final Four has ties to College Park, as Doherty won three national championships as a player under now-Navy coach Cindy Timchal. Maryland coach Cathy Reese and Boston College coach Acacia Walker also played under Timchal as student-athletes.

Key Players: Penn State

Madison Carter | Sophomore | Attacker

Katie O’Donnell | Junior | Midfielder

Cat Rainone | Senior | Goalie

Carter and O’Donnell have paced Penn State’s record-setting offense this season, and they’ll need two of the bigger performances of their careers for the Nittany Lions to knock off the Terps. Expect at least a hat trick apiece out of this dynamic duo. On the defensive end, Rainone posted 13 saves against Princeton last weekend, including a game-clincher of epic proportions.

Key Players: Maryland

Megan Whittle | Junior | Attacker

Zoe Stukenberg | Senior | Midfielder

Megan Taylor | Sophomore | Goalie

Maryland (21-0) is led by junior attacker Megan Whittle, who enters Friday’s contest with a team-high 66 goals and 14 assists on the season. Stukenberg is one of the most dominant offensive middies in college lacrosse, posting 76 points (50 goals) this spring. Taylor boasts a perfect 20-0 record with 191 saves.
