Peyton Jones’ Stick Save Makes SportsCenter’s Top 10 Plays Of Friday Night

No. 11 Penn State men’s hockey picked up a huge win on the road over No. 7 Minnesota Friday night.

Although Andrew Sturtz, Denis Smirnov, and Nikita Pavlychev all scored for Penn State, the highlight of the night came off the stick of goaltender Peyton Jones late in the 2nd period.

After a turnover in front of his net, Jones made a diving stick save to deny a shot from Minnesota’s Mike Szmatula. The save was good enough to land the No. 4 spot on SportsCenter’s Top Ten plays of Friday evening.

It was not only an incredible save, but also a crucial one for Penn State. If Szmatula had scored, Minnesota would have cut the deficit to just two goals and potentially gained momentum heading into the third period.

The save didn’t just get national attention from ESPN; the NHL on NBC showed Jones some love for what may be the save of the season so far in college hockey.

“I’ve obviously seen saves like that before on SportsCenter, but I’ve never seen one live,” Penn State coach Guy Gadowsky said after the game. “It was pretty incredible.”

Jones and the Nittany Lions are back in action on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. for game two of the series. With a win, Penn State can sweep Minnesota in a regular season series for the first time in program history.
