Pennsylvania State Legislature Funds Penn State Pending Governor’s Approval

The Pennsylvania State House of Representatives finally passed SB326 Wednesday, which officially funds university’s state appropriations for the 2017-2018 fiscal year. The bill was previously passed by the State Senate a few months ago, so the bill will now go to Governor Tom Wolf for final approval.

“The decisions were difficult, and so it just took a while to get to a compromise,” Senate Majority Leader Jake Corman said in a short press conference earlier. “I think pretty clearly we won’t do spending without revenue again. I thought that would sort of be quick to put together. It clearly wasn’t.”

The university, including administrators and student leaders, has been lobbying to state legislators for the past several months to secure this funding. President Barron even asked students and others to reach out to their state legislators to pass the revenue package multiple times.

“Chair [Isaac] Will has worked very hard over the past year on his governmental outreach efforts,” Pennsylvania Association of State-Related Students Director Zach Robinson said. “I would like to think that they have finally paid off.”
