Happy Valley Music Label To Host Spooky Halloween Concert Featuring Girlpool

Happy Valley Music Label will host a “Spooky Halloween” concert at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 31 at Chronic Town.

Los Angeles folk punk band Girlpool will headline HVML’s the show. The concert will also feature performances by the groups Palm, Old Maybe, and Sea Offs.

HVML will host a presale for the concert on Friday, October 27 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the HUB. Student tickets are $5 with a Penn State ID and general public tickets will cost $7. Doors at Chronic Town will open at 7:30 p.m. and the show will begin at 8:30 p.m. Costumes are encouraged.

Cleo Tucker and Harmony Tividad are known collectively as Girlpool, but they’re also best friends. Initially devoid of any percussion, Girlpool embraced a sort of candor, angst, and constructive vulnerability on their 2015 debut album Before the World Was Big. Upon the release of their sophomore album Powerplant, Girlpool welcomed drummer Miles Wintner to the ensemble. With the addition of percussion, Girlpool distilled its sound into a more wholesome, harmonic emotionalism.

Girlpool’s songs have been coined both nursery rhymes and anthems for modernity, offering wisdom as well as frustration with what it means to sound and be vulnerable in this day and age. Citing the influence of Elliott Smith, the Cranberries, the Cocteau Twins, Brian Eno, Arthur Russell, and Graham Nash, Girlpool’s sound is rustic, but never dated. The band’s music possesses the ability to both thrill and humor you.

Philadelphia-based bands Palm and Old Maybe will share the stage with Girlpool on Tuesday night. Sea Offs, the songwriting juncture of Penn State alums Olivia Price and Rashmit Arora, will also perform.
Updates on the show and additional information about the bands can be found at the event’s Facebook page.
