Penn State Women’s Soccer To Open NCAA Tournament Against Stony Brook

The Penn State women’s soccer team congregated at Letterman’s Monday afternoon for the NCAA tournament selection show, where the Nittany Lions found out they’ll face Stony Brook Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Jeffrey Field.

As one of four No. 3 seeds, Penn State (12-4-4) will host the first three rounds of the tournament in University Park. The rest of its pod features Georgetown and Wake Forest. The Seawolves (11-10) beat Vermont 2-1 Sunday to win the America East.

Erica Dambach’s Nittany Lions captured their seventh Big Ten tournament championship Sunday at Grand Park in Westfield, Ind., topping Northwestern 2-1 despite having to move the match indoors after two lengthy weather delays.

Penn State led the Big Ten in shots this season with 308 in 20 matches, thanks in large part to Laura Freigang’s breakout sophomore campaign. The Oppenheim, Germany, native was named the conference’s offensive player of the tournament after scoring a pair of goals over the weekend. She’s currently tied with senior forward Megan Schafer for the team lead in goals this season with five.

The Nittany Lions claimed their first national championship in program history in 2015, beating Duke 1-0 on Raquel Rodríguez’s heroic strike. The journey to bring home their second NCAA title begins Friday at Jeffrey Field.
