Saquon Barkley Not Among Heisman Trophy Finalists

Penn State star running back Saquon Barkley was not among the three finalists for the 2017 Heisman Trophy when they were announced on Monday evening.

Despite a red-hot start to the season that saw Barkley return two kickoffs for touchdowns, rack up over 300 all-purpose yards in one game, and even throw a touchdown pass, the Coplay, PA, native will not attend the Heisman Trophy ceremony in New York City on Saturday night.

Instead, Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield, Stanford running back Bryce Love, and Louisville quarterback and defending Heisman winner Lamar Jackson keep their hopes alive for the most-coveted trophy in college football.

Barkley was a Heisman Trophy favorite for most of the early part of this season, but his performances againstĀ Michigan State and Rutgers — combined with another ridiculous year from Baker Mayfield — knocked him out of consideration for college football’s most prestigious individual award.

Barkley is the first Penn State player since Larry Johnson in 2002 to have a real shot at the Heisman, but unfortunately it appears that he will not finish among the top three vote-getters.

However, he’s still atop NFL draft expert Mel Kiper’s Big Board, a position he has held since Week 8 of the college football season. Penn State fans will get one more chance to see Barkley suit up in the blue and white December 30 when the Nittany Lions take on Washington in the Fiesta Bowl.
