Favorites To Replace Tyler Davis As Penn State’s Next Kicker

Kicker Alex Barbir — one of the favorites headed into next season along with incoming freshman and Iowa native Jake Pinegar at the soon-to-be-vacant position — is transferring from the program to explore different options.

Though Pinegar is the presumptuous favorite for the future, Barbir had in-game experience. He kicked off six times in three games for Penn State in 2017 — including two kickoffs sent out of bounds. We took a look at the remaining kickers who factor into 2018 for the Nittany Lions.

Jake Pinegar

Pinegar should win the job as a true freshman thanks to his booming leg. He’s shown here mashing footballs at the Kohl’s kicking camp earlier this summer — highlighted by his ability to put the ball into orbit on kickoffs. He’s even got placement down after nailing the goalpost from well beyond the 50.

He’s well built for a kicker, and should have no issue running away with the job. An exceptional athlete, Pinegar also stood out at wide receiver and cornerback in high school. Here’s what Kohl’s had to say about the Penn State commit:

Pinegar recently attended the 2017 Midwest Spring Showcase. He is one of the best athletes in the 2018 class. He has explosive hips and fast leg. He charted well by making 9 field goals and also averaged 71.75 yards per kickoff. Having the ability to call on his “A” ball will need to be a focus this summer. His “A” ball on kickoffs, is in the top 3 nationally. Pinegar attended the 2016 Winter Showcase Camp in December. He charted very well going 8 out of 10 on field goals. Pinegar has as much upside as anyone in the 2018 class!

Nick DeAngelis

DeAngelis, a true junior, transferred into the program after spending two seasons at Division III school William Paterson from the Eastern College Athletic Conference. DeAngelis compiled a career field goal percentage of .600, and went 6-10 his freshman year.

Though DeAngelis has no in-game experience at Penn State, he’ll give the incoming Pinegar some competition during training camp, and should serve as a viable backup in case of injury.

Here’s a glimpse at DeAngelis’ range — he’s hit from 60 against air:

Carson Landis

Landis didn’t arrive with much fanfare, and did not see the field in his true freshman season. He faces an uphill battle if he wants to win the starting job, though should be included in a three-way competition to replace Davis. Landis was also an accomplished volleyball player, helping his Emmaus High team capture the PIAA State Championship in his senior season.
