Penn State Track And Field Claims Fourteen Titles At Penn State National Open

The Nittany Lions donned retro themed uniforms as they ran, jumped, and threw their way to 14 titles during the two-day Penn State National Open meet over the weekend. The men are currently ranked No. 8 in the nation while the women sit at No. 24 after the weekend. The meet, hosted at the Ashenfelter Indoor Track, included two school records and several Big Ten and NCAA top-10 performances.

The momentum started Friday night with Maddie Holmberg scoring 4,133 points in the pentathlon, which accumulates points earned in five separate events. Her score currently ranks No. 3 in the NCAA. Along the way, she broke the Penn State pentathlon school record in the shot put, throwing 14.02 meters.

A second school record was broken Friday night as sophomore David Lucas outperformed his own weight-throw record that he set two weeks ago. His final throw of the competition landed at 21.81 meters and puts him at No. 8 in the NCAA this season.

The team of Isaiah Harris, Dan Chisena, Domenic Perretta, and Colin Abert combined to run 9:36.48 in the distance medley relay and currently rank No. 3 in the NCAA. Other wins Friday night came from Xavier Smith running 6.72 seconds in the 60 meters, Malik Moffett jumping out to 7.18 meters in the long jump, and Keianna Albury running 7.37 seconds in the 60 meters.

Day two of competition brought eight more first place finishes. On the men’s side, Colin Abert returned to the track and won the 3,000 meter event in 8:05.03, which currently stands at No. 9 in the NCAA. Freshman Terrance Laird took the 200 meter title in 20.76, barely missing the school record and ranking No. 6 in the NCAA. Laird was closely trailed by fellow Nittany Lion Malik Moffett who finished second in 20.96 seconds.

In the 400 meters, Dan Chisena returned to run 46.27 seconds, good for No. 7 in the NCAA and just five one-hundredths of a second off the school record. Nittany Lion Owen Wing ran to a win in the 1,000 meter race with a time of 2:27.42.

After an impressive run in the 600 meter event last weekend, junior Isaiah Harris moved up to his 800 meter race this weekend where he took the title in 1:47.79, a time that ranks second in the NCAA. He was closely followed by teammate Domenic Perretta who finished in third in 1:49.81, No. 13 in the NCAA.

The women also captured some titles with a win in the 600 meter event by Rachel DeCecco and Lauren Costa, Kiara Lester, Victoria Tachinski, and Elyse Skerpon combining to win the 4×400 meter event in 3:46.92.

Both teams will be in action once again this weekend for the Sykes & Sabock Challenge Cup, which will be hosted Friday and Saturday in the Ashenfelter track.
