Chain Falls From BJC Ceiling, Hits Dancer

Update 3:05 p.m. Monday: THON said at its post-event press conference that all future communications on this matter will come from the university. Penn State said via email the dancer was taken to the hospital after she was hit but the chain just after 11 p.m. Friday. She was discharged from the hospital on Saturday. You can read the full statement from the university below.

A student dancer was injured shortly after 11 p.m. on Friday, when a chain fell to the floor of the Bryce Jordan Center. The safety of all guests is Penn State’s top priority, and professional staff at the Bryce Jordan Center acted immediately to evaluate the situation and ensure the highest level of safety for all THON attendees. The dancer was evaluated by EMS personnel and taken to a hospital for treatment. She was discharged from the hospital on Saturday and is recovering at home. Penn State Student Care and Advocacy has been in touch with our student and her family, and will continue to offer her support.

Update 2: 44 a.m. Sunday: It’s still unclear what happened to the student who was hit by the chain, but it sure seems like she’s no longer on the floor as a dancer this weekend. THON said they cannot comment on the student’s health status.

Update 12:05 a.m. Saturday: THON released a statement on the incident, emphasizing that the safety of all involved in THON continues to take priority. You can read the full statement below.

A student dancer was injured. THON is working closely with the Bryce Jordan Center staff professionals to evaluate the situation and ensure the highest level of safety for all attendees. This will continue to remain a priority for the duration of the weekend.

Original story: A chain has reportedly fallen from the ceiling of the Bryce Jordan Center and hit a dancer. We’ve been told 6abc aired a report on its 11 p.m. news about the incident, but the channel has yet to post the video online.

The Daily Collegian also posted photos on Twitter of a chain running from the Bryce Jordan Center ceiling to the floor and said a photographer saw the chain hitting a dancer.

“I do not have any information on that incident,” a THON public relations captain said.

It’s unclear at this time whether the dancer was injured or whether he or she will continue to dance for the remainder of the 46 hours.

We’ll continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
