Penn Staters Campaigning For With Purpose In National Competition

Just because THON 2018 has come and gone doesn’t mean the fight against pediatric cancer is over for the semester. Five Penn State seniors are participating in the National PRSSA Bateman Case Study Competition by campaigning for With Purpose, a youth-led movement dedicated to creating a world where kids with cancer have access to safe and effective treatment.

The campaign is designed to spread awareness and advocate for further research and funding and sheds light on the fact that few advancements have been made in pediatric cancer research since the 1970s.

Last week the team held a 70s photo booth in the HUB to educate students about the lack of funding for pediatric cancer research. Four Diamonds, THON’s sole beneficiary, dedicates more than $5 million each year to research through grants and other support, funding 84 research professionals. But as With Purpose points out, it’s just not enough.

Now the team is asking Penn State students to sign a petition that will be sent to legislators to fight for more of the National Cancer Institute’s budget to go towards pediatric cancer research. Currently, all forms of childhood cancers only receive about 4% of the budget in total.

Kayla Ramans leads the team of five, which also includes Ann Klinck, Meghan Reinhardt, Morisa Young, and Maddie Woodrow. Bellisario College of Communications professors Ann Major and Renea Nichols are advising the group and helping with the campaign.

The team is tabling in the HUB Wednesday until 4 p.m. to allow students to sign postcards with 4 cents taped to them to symbolize the 4 percent of each dollar that goes toward pediatric cancer research.
