Mike Gesicki Switching Back To Jersey No. 88

Penn State standout Mike Gesicki will wear the jersey No. 88 for the Miami Dolphins in his second NFL season.

Gesicki wore No. 86 as a rookie after the Dolphins selected him with their second-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Wide receiver Leonte Carroo wore the tight end’s familiar 88 last season, but he was released by Miami earlier this offseason. The number change has been made official on the Dolphins’ roster.

As a rookie, Gesicki appeared in all 16 of the Dolphins’ games and made seven starts at tight end. He hauled in 22 passes for 202 yards as Miami struggled to a 7-9 record under head coach Adam Gase.

Gesicki finished his Penn State career with 129 receptions for 1,481 yards and 15 touchdowns in his familiar No. 88. He was an essential part of the high-flying Penn State teams that won the Big Ten and Fiesta Bowl in 2016 and 2017, respectively. He emerged as a star in the Nittany Lions’ run to the Big Ten title game as a junior with a career-high 679 yards through the air.

The tight end returned to Happy Valley for his senior season in 2017, when he caught 57 passes for 563 yards and nine scores en route to a Fiesta Bowl victory over Washington.

Jersey numbers can be a point of superstition for athletes, so this change just might bring Gesicki some luck. If anything, Gesicki can certainly compare himself to another famous Michael…
