Borough Council Candidate Tom Dougherty To Be Sworn Into UPUA As IFC Rep

Borough Council candidate and current Penn State sophomore Tom Dougherty will be involved in University Park Undergraduate Association’s 14th Assembly after all.

On the organization’s agenda for this week is swearing Dougherty in as the representative for the Interfraternity Council, a seat that has existed previously but is now considered a Community Representative alongside new seats for Black Caucus, Latino Caucus, and Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) Caucus.

“I am not running [for UPUA representative],” Dougherty said in February when he announced his Borough Council campaign. “I have to focus my time so I can get elected. I’m trying to push for some other ideas in IFC.”

Dougherty was an at-large representative in UPUA’s 13th Assembly this year and was the elected internally to serve as the organization’s liaison to the State College Borough Council.

Rather than focusing his time on the UPUA election, he had planned to apply for a position on the 14th Assembly’s executive board as the director of governmental affairs. That all changed when he saw an opportunity to help enhance the IFC Representative position.

“Once I talked to some people about the IFC position, it was obvious that the position needed a revamping of energy and work,” Dougherty said. “I knew I would be involved with UPUA one way or another. This was to make sure my communication with our student government on Town and Gown initiatives remained in my focus.”

Dougherty is a member of the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity. He’s vying for a seat on the State College Borough Council and to be the first undergraduate student in the position since the 1970s. Dougherty said he’ll be knocking on doors leading up to the primary on Tuesday, May 21.
