Miska Jewelers To Open In Former Moyer Jewelers Location

Moyer Jewelers closed its doors at the corner of East College Avenue and South Allen Street in December after nearly 70 years in business. Now another family-owned jeweler with deep roots in State College will open in the same location.

Father and daughter Stephen and Elizabeth Miska said on Wednesday that they will open Miska Jewelers at the 100 E. College Ave. building on May 1.

Stephen Miska operated S.J. Miska on South Fraser Street for more than 25 years before closing the store in 2014 and moving to Washington, D.C. to work as a national jewelry consultant and appraiser.

The Miskas plan to hire six to eight employees in the coming months. The store will have in-house jewelry design, manufacturing and repair facilities, allowing for “quick, quality service at fair prices,” they said in a news release.

For Stephen Miska, a second-generation jeweler, the new store will be a return to where it all started. He began his full-time career in 1982 as a manager at Moyer Jewelers.

“The retail jewelry industry has been a very big part of my life,” he said. “I’ve worked in this business since I was 14 — first with my father and then in my own business.”

It was while working with his father that Miska began to learn the goldsmith trade and do repairs, ring sizings and engravings.

Lori Moyer said she is happy to see another family-owned jeweler come to the location where her family’s business operated for decades.

“We are pleased that Miska Jewelers will continue the legacy of a trusted, family-owned jewelry store in Moyer Jewelers’ former location,” she said. “We believe that the Miska family business, led by Stephen, his daughter Elizabeth Miska, and their families will continue the tradition in a manner that we can wholeheartedly support.”

Miska Jewelers will be open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, with extended hours to 8 p.m. on Thursdays; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays; and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sundays of Penn State home football weekends.
