Mike Posner Captivates Old Main Lawn Crowd On ‘Ninja Tour’

Mike Posner rolled through State College Friday afternoon to make Old Main Lawn a stop on his “ninja tour.” Just Posner and his acoustic guitar took over part of Old Main Lawn, preaching positivity and big dreams to a circle of cross-legged college kids.

Posner’s in the middle of his walk across America. Why? Simply because he wants to. Instead of touring this summer, he’s on the walk — he started in Asbury Park, New Jersey more than two weeks ago.

It’s not often you see a concert crowd without their phones out, but Posner asked those who came out to see him to put their phones on airplane mode, and most everyone complied without complaint. (There was one song later for an Instagram moment.) He then told everyone to pair up and look into their partner’s eyes silently for five straight minutes to foster the type of human connection that’s become scarce.

Posner led sing-alongs to some of his most famous hits, including “Please Don’t Go,” “Move On,” “Be As You Are,” and, of course, “Cooler Than Me.” He even acknowledged that many of his songs came out when he was graduating college a decade ago — when many of those in attendance were in the 8th grade.

An acoustic “I Took A Pill In Ibiza” payed tribute to Avicii, whose death Posner said reminded him to live life to the fullest and inspired him to start his walk across the country now instead of putting it off.

It’s not often that you can just spend a carefree hour on Old Main Lawn not looking at your phone and singing along with a bona fide pop star, but Friday gave those still hanging around the opportunity to do just that. Posner said he’d much rather play for free and get the human connection with fans than to tour and be blocked off purposely from those attending his shows.

Posner closed with a spoken word poem “Gratitude,” reminding his audience to be thankful for every moment.
