Penn State Men’s Lacrosse To Take On UMBC In First Round Of NCAA Tournament

Update May 8: Penn State men’s lacrosse now knows its opponent in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.

The Nittany Lions will take on UMBC after its 14-8 victory over Marist in a play-in game.

UMBC improved to 7-8 in the 2019 season with today’s victory. The Retrievers got this far after winning the American East conference in overtime. They beat Vermont in the title game thanks to a championship-winning goal from Trevor Patschorke, who’s scored 29 goals this year.

Though it might not have been in lacrosse, UMBC is definitely no stranger to taking on the top overall seed in a national tournament. The Retrievers’ men’s basketball team famously destroyed No. 1 Virginia in last year’s big dance to become the first 16-seed to take down a top-seeded team in NCAA tournament history.

Original Story: No. 1 Penn State men’s lacrosse is headed back to the NCAA Tournament.

The Nittany Lions will take on the winner of Marist and UMBC in Jeff Tambroni’s second NCAA Tournament appearance as Penn State’s head coach. The two squads will face off at Panzer Stadium in State College as the Nittany Lions will try to get their first NCAA Tournament win in program history.

It has been a historic season for the Nittany Lions, as the squad finished with a 14-1 overall record and a 6-0 mark in the Big Ten. This represents the only one-loss season that Penn State men’s lacrosse has ever had, their sole defeat coming against Yale this past February.

Penn State went on to win their next eleven games after the loss in Connecticut, including their most recent win over Johns Hopkins in the program’s first ever appearance in the Big Ten Championship game. The Nittany Lions’ nerve wracking win on Saturday night was the the first overtime Big Ten title game in conference history.

The squad officially became the No. 1 ranked team in the country this past March and haven’t relinquished their spot since. Penn State will be the heavy favorites heading in to this year’s tournament thanks to their nearly perfect season.

The game will be played at noon on Sunday, May 12.
