Penn State Releases ‘Best Practices For Safe Return’ Video

Penn State released a brief video this week that summarizes new procedures that will be put into place to keep campus safe amid the coronavirus pandemic this fall.

The video, titled “PPE Policy, Classroom Management, and Safety,” is a visual representation of the detailed coronavirus guidelines for Penn State’s campus. It’s part of the university’s new “Mask Up or Pack Up” initiative, Penn State’s research-based campaign that intends to promote the usage of masks within the community.

The video begins with a reminder to use the daily coronavirus symptom checker and to wear a properly fitting mask before exiting your dorm or residence.

The second scene of the video is titled “Universal Masking” and explains that clear masks might be worn by instructors when working with students with hearing disabilities or when teaching language courses. Face shields are required in addition to cloth masks when working in the laboratory setting or in close contact instruction.

Signage will be located at the entrance of every building to remind students and faculty about proper coronavirus procedures.

The video showed a sneak peek of what classrooms will look like this fall. Chairs are arranged to maintain social distancing, markers are placed on desks that are fine to use, and other tables and chairs have been removed to promote physical distancing.

The university will clean each classroom daily. However, professors are encouraged to disinfect their workspaces, computers, and microphones upon arrival.

According to the guidance, if a student comes to class without a mask, instructors should place a disposable mask on a desk for the student to pick up and wear. The instructor should remind the student in a “firm, yet kind manner” of the Student Code of Conduct and Coronavirus Compact if they fail to comply.

If a student still refuses to wear a mask or follow guidelines, they will be asked to leave the classroom or the class will be dismissed early.

Food consumption is prohibited in the classroom and beverages must be consumed using a straw to limit mask removal.

When class ends, students seated closest to the door are expected to leave the classroom first. All questions for the instructor should be dealt with virtually instead of after class.
