Report: Big Ten Eyeing October 10 Start For Football

Reports continue to circulate on when the Big Ten will begin its postponed football season.

The conference is now considering starting the season on October 10 if it can “pass updated safety measures and procedures,” according to a report Tuesday by The Dan Patrick Show.

Patrick’s report came just hours after President Donald Trump tweeted that he had a “productive” conversation with Commissioner Kevin Warren. The Big Ten also confirmed that a conversation took place between the two with a statement Tuesday.

“A White House representative reached out to Big Ten Conference commissioner Kevin Warren on Monday, August 31, 2020, to facilitate a phone call between President Donald J. Trump and Commissioner Warren,” the conference stated. “On Tuesday, September 1, 2020, Commissioner Warren and the President had a productive conversation.”

The statement added that the conference and its Return to Competition Task Force “are exhausting every resource to help student-athletes get back to playing the sports they love.”

Rumors have continued to spread that the conference is in fact pushing for a fall start date. It was reported last week by Jeff Potrykus that the conference was discussing a season of at least eight games that would start the week of Thanksgiving.

While a postponed fall season may be a possibility, the Big Ten stated Monday night that it officially voted 11-3 to postpone fall sports in August, including football. Warren also published a statement days after the decision in which he stated the conference’s leadership was “overwhelmingly in support” of postponing fall sports, and stated that the topic wouldn’t be revisited.

The Big Ten has faced increasing criticism as it’s considered the notion of a delayed fall football season. Yahoo Sports’ Pete Thamel questioned a Thanksgiving start in an article Tuesday. Thamel added that an immediate start would be out of the question, as many Big Ten squads don’t currently have all of their players on campus.

Despite the report of an October start, Nebraska Athletic Director Bill Moos shot down the idea Tuesday afternoon. According to Parker Gabriel of the Lincoln Journal Star, Moos said there was “nothing to” the rumor.
