Penn State To Host Virtual National Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration

Penn State will kick off its month-long virtual celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month on Tuesday, September 15.

Many Penn State campuses, including University Park, will host unique events to recognize hispanic culture, including cooking demos, guest speakers, and more. The events hope to celebrate people and cultures from Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean.

The virtual events will take place from September 15 through October 15. Many events will limit attendance to students and faculty at that specific campus.

Below is a list of each campus’s events, and a continuously updated version can be found here.

University Park

September 21 @ 6 p.m. — Julio Ricardo Varela, who founded LatinoRebels.com and co-hosts a podcast called “In The Thick,” will host a Zoom call that talks about media representations of Latinos in America. Email sandoval@psu.edu for the Zoom link.

October 15 @ 6 p.m. — Critic, essayist, and author Myriam Gurba will deliver the keynote address. Email sandoval@psu.edu for the Zoom link.

Berks

September 16, all day — The Penn State Berks Spanish Program, the Penn State Diversity Committee, and the Latinos United For Change club are joining together to officially begin Berks’ celebration. This includes a fun Dominican recipe cooking demo and a dramatic poetry reading.
