HUB Reopens After Evacuation Due To ‘Strong Gas Smell’

Following a brief evacuation, Penn State’s HUB Robeson-Center has reopened after a strong gas smell was reported on its lower two floors Wednesday night.

Penn State Police responded to the reports and promptly evacuated the building. Alpha Fire Department and staff from Penn State’s Office of Physical Plant also answered the call.

Following a brief investigation, authorities found the problem resulted from a clogged pipe leading out of Hibachi-San, which caused fumes to back up into the building. OPP crews are now snaking that pipe to resolve the issue.

Later, according to the university, the gas smell dissipated and the building reopened to the public.

“OPP staff are on-site to continue to investigate and monitor the situation,” Penn State spokesperson Lisa Powers said.

At this time, it’s unclear what exactly caused the gas odor in the HUB. Neither Penn State nor the fire department immediately responded to a request for comment on additional details.
