Three Nittany Lions Drafted In 2020 National Lacrosse League Draft

Three Penn State men’s lacrosse players — Mac O’Keefe, Dylan Foulds, and Grant Ament — were selected in the 2020 National Lacrosse League (NLL) entry draft Thursday night.

The first Nittany Lion off the board was Mac O’Keefe at No. 15 overall to the San Diego Seals. He entered the draft ranked No. 29 overall and surprisingly went even higher.

O’Keefe is Penn State’s leading scorer going into the 2021 season with 164 goals. He ranks third in program history with 198 points. Before the season ended last year, O’Keefe found himself with 36 points in 7 games, 24 of those being goals.

O’Keefe still has one season left with the Nittany Lions before he takes his talents to the pros.

The next Penn Stater off the board was Dylan Foulds, the attack man out of British Columbia. He had an under-the-radar year at Penn State, but a strong start to last year’s season helped him be a second-round selection in the draft.

Many lacrosse analysts thought they might see the hometown Ament go at this position, but it was Foulds that heard his name called.

Finally, Ament was drafted with the No. 65 overall pick by the New England Black Wolves.

Ament holds a multitude of records at the NCAA level. However, questions about his size and experience held him out of the limelight in the NLL. He didn’t hear his name called in the first three rounds but found himself selected fourth round by the Black Wolves.

The first pick of the PLL draft and the assist specialist will have a chance to make the teams that passed on him pay the consequences.

The NLL is the older, more established of the two professional lacrosse leagues, the other being the literal Professional Lacrosse League (PLL). The league debuted in 1986 and has expanded to 14 teams, even introducing a 15th for the 2021 season. Its biggest claim to fame is its attendance records. The NLL averaged the third-highest indoor attendance in their 2019 season, trailing the NBA and NHL.
