Nittany Lions In The NFL: Week Six Roundup

Unlike the past few weeks, the NFL season’s sixth week was a relatively slow one for the league’s Nittany Lions.

From a roller-coaster day for Miles Sanders to the return of Chris Godwin, here’s how former Penn State’s fared in this week’s NFL action.

Miles Sanders, Philadelphia Eagles

After a quiet first half, Philadelphia’s lead back played a role in one of the craziest plays of the week.

Sanders broke free of the Ravens defense in the third quarter for a 74-yard run but fumbled the ball prior to reaching the goal line. Luckily, Eagles wide receiver JJ Arcega-Whiteside was able to jump on the ball in the end zone, resulting in an Eagles touchdown.

This makes the second straight week in which Sanders has recorded at least a 74-yard run, which gives him two of the top-five longest runs this season.

The score opened the Eagles’ account in the game, creating the momentum that pushed Philadelphia within a two point conversion of tying the Baltimore Ravens. In the end, Sanders and the Eagles lost 30-28.

Unfortunately, this play was the last we saw of Sanders on Sunday. The Penn State alum left the game with an apparent knee injury and is expected to miss a week or two.

Allen Robinson, Chicago Bears

Robinson was able to notch five catches for 53 yards in a win on Sunday over the Carolina Panthers.

While Sunday was nothing special, the former Penn State wideout is quietly having a spectacular season for the Bears. He’s tied for second in the NFL in catches (40) and tied for eighth in receiving yards (474).

Chris Godwin, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Godwin returned from his hamstring injury for the first time in three weeks. The Delaware native hauled in five catches for 48 yards as the Buccaneers blew the Packers out 38-10.

Despite the seemingly endless offensive weapons that the new-look Buccaneers have, Godwin has now caught a healthy 16 of 20 targets from new (old?) quarterback Tom Brady.

Amani Oruwariye, Detroit Lions

The second-year cornerback continues to shine for the Detroit secondary. Lining up across from DJ Chark Jr. all game, Oruwariye was able to hold the star receiver to just 43 yards on a whopping 14 targets. Oruwariye and the Lions defeated the Jaguars 34-16 to improve to 2-3 in the young season.

Daquon Jones, Tennessee Titans

In his first game back after testing positive for coronavirus, Daquon Jones was able to make an impact for the undefeated Titans squad. Jones recorded four tackles and was able to bring down quarterback Deshaun Watson for his first sack of the season.

The Titans beat the Houston Texans in a 42-36 overtime thriller and are one of just three undefeated teams remaining.

Robbie Gould, San Fransisco 49ers

Gould drilled a 49-yard field goal in a 24-16 win over the Los Angeles Rams. The former Penn State kicker was also 3/3 on extra points on Sunday, which keeps him at a perfect 16/16 on the season.

Other Notables

Dolphins tight end Mike Gesicki surprisingly failed to record a catch for the first time this season against a struggling New York Jets secondary. In the same game, former Penn State kicker Sam Ficken missed his only field goal attempt for the winless Jets.

DaeSean Hamilton also failed to record a catch for the Denver Broncos this week. Hamilton has just three catches on 11 targets through five games this season.

Washington safety Troy Apke did not see the field for the first time this season on Sunday as the Football Team fell 20-19 to the New York Giants.

Jesse James recorded just one catch for the second straight week as he continues to serve primarily as a blocking tight end for the Detroit Lions.
